Unveiled at the 1957 Geneva Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster succeeded the legendary Gullwing following strong demand from U. S. importer Maximilian Hoffmann. It featured a redesigned tubular spaceframe with conventionally hinged doors, improved single-joint rear suspension for greater driving stability, and from 1961, became the first Mercedes-Benz passenger car equipped with four-wheel disc brakes.
